Does Health Sharing Cover Surgery?
Yes, for eligible new needs. Zion, Medi-Share, Sedera, CrowdHealth, and CHM all list surgery as shareable in our plan files. You still pay the IUA or household portion first. Surgery for a condition you already have follows the pre-existing wait. Health sharing is not insurance, and sharing is never guaranteed.

Surgery is one of the big-bill categories these programs are built for. The honest version is still two-part: new surgery after enrollment can be shared, and surgery tied to a known condition waits. The monthly share only starts to matter after you know which door you are walking through.
What “shareable surgery” means
In our ministry files, surgery is marked as a shareable category at the plans in the table below. That means the published guidelines include eligible surgical bills. It does not mean every operating-room invoice is paid. You still meet the IUA or household portion. The ministry still reviews the need against its guidelines. Members still share voluntarily. Zion and Medi-Share also list emergency as shareable, which is why an ER-to-OR path is the scenario most households model first.
Plan-by-plan surgery rules
| Plan | Surgery category | What you pay first |
|---|---|---|
| Zion HealthShare | Shareable. Unlimited per eligible need. | IUA $1,250 / $2,500 / $5,000 |
| Medi-Share | Shareable. No annual cap on eligible needs. | AHP $3,000 / $6,000 / $9,000 / $12,000 |
| Sedera | Shareable after IUA, then 20% co-share. | IUA $500-$5,000 plus 20% |
| CrowdHealth | Eligible new events. No per-event cap. | $500 member commitment (full-service) |
| CHM | Shareable. $125,000 per illness on the base program. | IUA $300 / $500 / $1,000 |
When the surgery is already planned
If the surgeon already booked the date for a condition you had before you joined, you are in the pre-existing lane. Zion shares nothing in year one, then phases in. Medi-Share waits 36 months. CrowdHealth waits through year two. Sedera waits 12 months on most existing medical conditions. ACA insurance is the only option that must cover eligible pre-existing surgery from day one. Model the timing before you drop marketplace coverage.

Does health sharing cover surgery?
Yes, when the surgery is an eligible new need. Zion, Medi-Share, Sedera, CrowdHealth, and CHM all list surgery as a shareable category in our plan files. You pay the Initial Unshareable Amount or household portion first. Sharing is voluntary and never guaranteed. Surgery tied to a condition you already have follows each plan's pre-existing wait.
Does Zion HealthShare share surgery?
Yes. Zion’s plan file marks surgery and emergency as shareable, with unlimited sharing per eligible need after the IUA. IUA options are $1,250, $2,500, and $5,000, with a maximum of three IUAs per household per rolling 12 months. There is no provider network.
Do I still pay something before surgery is shared?
Yes. Zion uses a per-need IUA. Medi-Share uses an Annual Household Portion ($3,000, $6,000, $9,000, or $12,000). Sedera uses an IUA plus a 20% co-share after that. CrowdHealth uses a $500 member commitment per health event on the full-service membership. CHM uses an IUA of $300, $500, or $1,000 depending on level.
Is planned surgery for a condition I already have shared?
Usually not at first. That surgery is a pre-existing need. Zion shares nothing in year one, then phases in. Medi-Share waits 36 months. CrowdHealth waits through year two. Sedera waits 12 months on most existing medical conditions. Only ACA insurance must pay covered pre-existing surgery from day one.
Is health sharing a guarantee that the hospital bill will be paid?
No. Health sharing ministries are not insurance companies. Members share voluntarily under published guidelines. There is no state insurance regulator and no guaranty fund. If you need a legal obligation to pay, buy regulated insurance.
