North Carolina Health Sharing Plans 2026: Check Medicaid First, Then Who Can Enroll
North Carolina’s health-sharing math changed in December 2023, and it was not because a ministry rewrote its guidelines. The state expanded Medicaid. If your income is in the new adult range, the honest first click is NC Medicaid — not a year-stamped blog. If you are above that line (Research Triangle contractors, Charlotte 1099s, coastal small business), the payable menu is wide and there is no state mandate penalty.
This URL is additive. It does not recut the national 2026 ranking or the North Carolina state directory.
North Carolina’s legal status
Mandate: None. NC is not on NCSL’s individual-mandate list. No state shared-responsibility payment.
Insurance: Sharing is not insurance. NAIC guidance is the regulator-level warning: no guarantee of payment, no NCDOI claim file that works like a licensed-insurer complaint.
Medicaid expansion (the NC-specific gate). North Carolina expanded adult Medicaid in December 2023. NC Medicaid / NCDHHS is the official eligibility source. Adults at or under 138% of the federal poverty level should apply there before they replace that coverage with a voluntary share. We will not invent your exact income cutoff here — use the state application.
Not hostile. No payable plan we enroll lists North Carolina as a blocked state on its official availability page.
Who can actually enroll a North Carolina household
| Plan | Enroll from NC? | Faith rule | Individual / mo | Family / mo | Paid hop? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zion HealthShare | Yes | None required | $114–$320 | $334–$899 | Yes — /go/zion-healthshare |
| Medi-Share | Yes | Christian statement | $115–$470 | $390–$850 | Yes — /go/medi-share |
| CrowdHealth | Yes | None | $60–$200 | $240–$660 | Yes — /go/crowdhealth |
| Sedera | Yes | None | $88–$413 | $325–$1,175 | Yes — /go/sedera |
| Knew Health | Yes | None | $142–$379 | $400–$950 | Yes — /go/knew-health |
| HSA Secure | Yes | None | $114–$320 | $334–$899 | Yes — /go/hsa-secure |
| CHM / Samaritan | Yes | Strict Christian | see reviews | see reviews | No /go |
Sedera’s official block list is WA, VT, PA, NM, CA. Knew Health’s is WA, VT, IL, NY, PA, MD, CA, OR. North Carolina is on neither. Zion excludes Washington only. CrowdHealth’s FAQ treats NC as a normal state (it is not a mandate state).
Individual vs family cost
Sharing rates are not rated by Raleigh vs Asheville zip. They are age + IUA + household size.
Zion: $114–$320 individual, $205–$617 couple, $334–$899 family.
CrowdHealth: $60–$200 individual under 55; $240–$660 family of four. Two-year pre-existing ineligibility.
Medi-Share: $115–$470 individual; $390–$850 family. Faith required.
Triangle and Charlotte contractors who sit just above Medicaid and just above subsidy cliffs are the households where Zion or CrowdHealth can beat an unsubsidized silver plan on monthly cash. If you still qualify for a premium tax credit, HealthCare.gov (NC uses the federal marketplace) usually wins.

Winner: Zion HealthShare
Every payable plan on the table can enroll an NC address. Fit-then-pay-then-faith: Zion is the paid winner for most households — no faith requirement, published 2026 bands, day-one exceptions for hypertension, cholesterol, and diabetes when the 12-month hospitalization test is met. Medi-Share is the paid Christian option, not the default. CrowdHealth if you are young, healthy, and can accept crowdfunding plus a two-year pre-existing wait. CHM and Samaritan: unpaid alternatives only.
North Carolina-specific notes
Atrium, Novant, UNC Health, Duke, ECU Health, Mission. No-network memberships = cash / reference-based pricing. Medi-Share’s PPO is the contracted card.
Hurricane and flood injuries. Emergency medical needs can be shareable after IUA. Temporary housing and property loss are not.
Contractor workforce. The Triangle’s 1099 density is why this query exists. Sharing does not restore a W-2 employer plan’s legal guarantees.
When NC Medicaid or ACA still wins
Income in the expansion range, pregnancy, disability pathways, or a condition that cannot wait out a phase-in. Start at NCDHHS or HealthCare.gov, not at an enroll button.
