netWell's claim-payment problems — read this first
netWell is one of the cheapest plans we list, but its member-payment record is among the worst in health sharing, and a state regulator has formally questioned whether it even qualifies as a health-sharing ministry.
- ✕Michigan's Department of Insurance and Financial Services issued an enforcement action (Case 25-18219, August 2025) finding netWell may NOT qualify for the health-care-sharing-ministry exemption — meaning it may have been selling unauthorized insurance in the state.
- ✕Trustpilot rates it about 2.4 out of 5, and the BBB lists recurring complaints about denied claims and unpaid bills (including a $40,000+ hospitalization left unprocessed for months).
- ✕Members report in-network providers not recognizing the coverage, and claims denied as 'pre-existing' — and netWell's rules include lifetime exclusions for serious conditions.
- ✕It is young (founded 2020) and small.
