Health Plans for Catholics: What Actually Exists

By The WhichHealthShare EditorsReviewed August 2026
Short answer

There is no regulated “Catholic health insurance.” Solidarity HealthShare is the Catholic-specific sharing ministry ($67–$399/mo individual, $1M per-incident cap, 2.5/5). It is not insurance, and we cannot enroll it. The enrollable Christian-statement option we recommend starting with is Medi-Share ($115–$470/mo, 4.5/5, no sharing cap, Trinitarian statement + church involvement). Paid alternatives with no Catholic requirement: Zion ($114–$320), CrowdHealth ($60–$200 under 55), Sedera ($88–$413), Knew Health ($142–$379), and HSA Secure ($114–$320).

Search for health plans for Catholics and you will find two different products mixed together: regulated ACA insurance (which has no Catholic version), and health care sharing ministries whose guidelines reference Catholic or Christian teaching. The second group is what most people mean. It is not insurance.

That distinction changes what happens when a large bill arrives. Sharing is voluntary. An ACA plan is a contract.

Solidarity Is the Catholic-Specific Ministry — With a Caveat

Solidarity HealthShare is the only plan in our dataset whose faith requirement is Catholic. Guidelines reference Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Individual monthly shares on Solidarity ONE run $67–$399. The published sharing cap is $1,000,000 per incident per year. We rate it 2.5/5 — well below the other ministries on this page — based on member-reported claims and communication issues already documented on our Solidarity review. Solidarity does not run a referral program here, so there is no enroll button.

A Catholic-specific mission and a low entry price do not make up for a 2.5 rating if a bill sits unresolved. That is why this page does not treat Solidarity as the default enroll path.

Medi-Share: The Enrollable Christian-Statement Starting Point

Medi-Share is not Catholic-specific. It requires a Trinitarian statement of faith and expects active church involvement. For Catholic households that can sign that statement, it is the highest-rated Christian-statement plan we can actually enroll: 4.5/5,400,000+ members, founded 1993, headquarters Melbourne, FL. Monthly shares are $115–$470 for an individual and $390–$850 for a family. Annual Household Portion (AHP) options are $3,000, $6,000, $9,000, $12,000. There is no annual or lifetime sharing cap.

Pre-existing conditions are not shared for the first 36 months; after 36 consecutive months, sharing is capped at $100,000 per member per year, and after 60 months at $500,000 per member per year. Those figures come from Medi-Share's published guidelines in our plan file — not from a live public rate card (medishare.com/pricing is a quote calculator). For the full review, see Medi-Share. This page does not replace that review.

Paid Alternatives If You Do Not Need a Catholic Statement

These five plans pay a referral on this site. None requires Catholic teaching. They are alternatives, not the primary enroll on this page.

Monthly figures are the published individual ranges in each plan's JSON (age bands and IUA/AHP tiers). CrowdHealth is a $60/person advocacy fee plus variable crowdfunding; the $60–$200 band is the under-55 individual range. HSA Secure mirrors Zion's rate table. None of these is a Catholic ministry.

When Real Insurance Is the Better Catholic Answer

If you qualify for ACA subsidies, have a serious pre-existing condition that needs treatment now, or need a legal guarantee that a covered claim will be paid, an ACA marketplace plan is the product that matches that need. Sharing ministries — including Solidarity and Medi-Share — impose waiting periods and can decline expenses outside published guidelines. See how health sharing differs from insurance and what people mean by Christian health insurance.

The Bottom Line

Catholic-specific sharing exists (Solidarity), but it is not insurance and we do not enroll it. The enrollable Christian-statement option on this page is Medi-Share ($115–$470/mo, 4.5/5, no sharing cap). If you do not need a faith statement, Zion, CrowdHealth, Sedera, Knew Health, and HSA Secure are the paid alternatives we already review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are health plans for Catholics?

There is no regulated product called Catholic health insurance. Solidarity HealthShare is the ministry built around Catholic teaching ($67–$399/mo individual, $1,000,000 per-incident annual cap, 2.5/5 on this site). Many Catholic households instead use a Christian-statement ministry such as Medi-Share ($115–$470/mo, 4.5/5, no annual or lifetime sharing cap) or an any-faith / secular paid plan (Zion, CrowdHealth, Sedera, Knew Health, HSA Secure). None of these is insurance.

Is Solidarity HealthShare the only Catholic option?

It is the only ministry in our dataset whose faith requirement is Catholic. It does not run a referral program on this site, so we have no enrollment link for it. Catholic families who want a Christian statement of faith and an enrollable plan typically look at Medi-Share. Families who do not need a Catholic or Christian statement can use Zion HealthShare, CrowdHealth, Sedera, Knew Health, or HSA Secure.

Are Catholic health sharing plans insurance?

No. Health care sharing ministries — Catholic, Christian, or secular — are not insurance. Members submit medical bills and the ministry facilitates voluntary sharing. There is no contractual guarantee of payment and no state insurance-department oversight of sharing decisions. If you need a legal guarantee, you need an ACA marketplace plan.

What is the highest-rated enrollable option for Catholic families?

On this site, Medi-Share is the highest-rated plan with a Christian statement of faith that we can enroll (4.5/5, $115–$470/mo individual, AHP $3,000 / $6,000 / $9,000 / $12,000, no sharing cap). Among paid alternatives with no Catholic requirement, Zion HealthShare rates 4.8/5 at $114–$320/mo.
