Is Knew Health Legit? The Honest Answer
Yes — Knew Health is legitimate. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Darien, IL, it reports 30,000+ members, publishes detailed Member Guidelines (v25.1, effective Sept 2025), and puts no annual or lifetime cap on new eligible needs. Membership prices haven't increased in over eight years, and we found no enforcement actions against the company in 2025–2026. The caveats: it is not insurance and says so explicitly, pre-existing conditions phase in slowly and settle at a permanent $125,000-per-year cap, maternity needs its own $5,000 responsibility amount for pregnancies beginning Jan 1 2026 or later, and pricing is quote-based.

Knew Health is the least famous of the major secular health shares, which makes “is it legit?” a fair first question. The verifiable record is solid: nearly a decade of operation, specific published guidelines, a genuinely member-friendly structure (three IUAs max per year, no lifetime cap), and a clean public record. The trade-offs live in the fine print — here's both sides.
The Verifiable Facts
| Founded / headquartered | 2017 — Darien, IL |
| Members | 30,000+ |
| Cost | From ~$142/mo individual ($142–$379 range); ~$400–$950 family; quote-based by age, household, IUA ($1K/$2.5K/$5K) |
| Sharing cap | No annual or lifetime cap on new eligible needs; max 3 IUAs per membership year |
| Faith requirement | None — welcomes members of all faiths and no faith |
| Pre-existing wait | Not shared year 1; $25K year 2; $50K year 3; $125K per rolling 12 months from year 4 (permanent). Controlled BP, high cholesterol, and diabetes don't count as pre-existing if hospitalization-free for 12 months. |
| Regulatory record | No 2025–26 enforcement actions found |
Why Knew Health's Legitimacy Holds Up
- Nearly a decade of operation. Founded 2017, Knew has shared member needs continuously since — younger than Medi-Share or Sedera, but well past startup fragility, with prices held flat for over eight years.
- Member-friendly structural rules. No annual or lifetime cap on new eligible needs, and you never owe more than three IUAs in a membership year even after multiple events — a protection most plans don't offer.
- A documented chronic-condition carve-out. Its guidelines state that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes (type 1 and 2) do NOT count as pre-existing when they've been controlled with medication or lifestyle and hospitalization-free for 12 months — one of the few secular plans besides Zion and Sedera with any day-one-style exception.
- Clean public record. No 2025–26 enforcement actions found against the company in our check, and its guidelines (v25.1, eff. Sept 2025) are published in full detail.

Find My Plan (2 min) →The Real Caveats — Stated Plainly
- It is not insurance. Knew's own disclaimer: it “is not an insurance company,” membership doesn't satisfy state or federal coverage requirements, and “there is no guarantee of payment of medical expenses you incur.” No legal guarantee, no regulator to appeal to, no guaranty fund.
- The pre-existing cap is permanent. Conditions from a 24-month look-back aren't shared at all in year one, then cap at $25K (year 2), $50K (year 3), and finally $125,000 per rolling 12 months from year four — and that ceiling never lifts. Unlike Zion, where day-one chronic sharing is broad, Knew's carve-out covers three controlled conditions only.
- Maternity has gates and its own price tag. Pregnancy must begin at least 90 days into membership AND delivery must fall after your first 12 months. For pregnancies beginning on or after January 1, 2026, maternity uses a $5,000 responsibility amount ($7,500 elective C-section).
- Rx sharing is capped at 12 months per Need. Official Member Guidelines v25.1: “The sharing of medications is limited to 12 months per Need, not to exceed $10,000.” Maintenance medications past that window — or above that dollar cap — come out of pocket. And availability excludes CA, IL, MD, NY, OR, PA, VT, and WA entirely.

How Knew Health Compares
| Plan | Since | Members | Our rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knew Health (secular) | 2017 | 30,000+ | 4.2/5 |
| Zion HealthShare (secular) | 2019 | 75,000+ | 4.8/5 |

| CrowdHealth (secular) | 2021 | 17,000+ | 4.6/5 |
Among secular plans, Knew trades some scale and brand recognition for genuinely protective member rules (3-IUA yearly max, no lifetime cap). If broad day-one chronic-condition sharing matters more, Zion is the stronger fit — see our comparison guides for head-to-heads across all eight vetted plans.
The Bottom Line
Knew Health is legitimate — an eight-year-old secular sharing community with no lifetime cap on new needs, unusually member-protective rules, and a clean public record. Join knowing it is voluntary sharing rather than insurance, the pre-existing path ends at a permanent $125K/year cap, medication sharing is limited to 12 months per Need and $10,000, and maternity requires planning ahead. Find My Plan (2 min) →Frequently Asked Questions
Is Knew Health a legitimate company?
Yes. Knew Health was founded in 2017, is headquartered in Darien, IL, and reports 30,000+ members. It publishes detailed Member Guidelines (current version effective September 1, 2025), has no annual or lifetime sharing cap on new eligible needs, and states that membership prices have not increased in over eight years. We found no enforcement actions against it in 2025–2026. It is one of the 8 plans we vet and rate at 4.2/5.
Is Knew Health insurance?
No — Knew Health's own disclaimer states it directly: "Knew Health is not an insurance company nor is the membership offered through an insurance company," membership does not satisfy state or federal healthcare coverage requirements, and "there is no guarantee of payment of medical expenses you incur." Members voluntarily share eligible expenses; there is no legal guarantee, no state regulator to appeal a denial to, and no guaranty fund.
Does Knew Health have a faith requirement?
None. Its guidelines state "Knew Health welcomes members of all faiths," and the homepage says it accepts everyone regardless of religious affiliation — there is no statement of faith, church attendance, or pastor sign-off anywhere in its requirements.
What do people commonly complain about with Knew Health?
The recurring friction points are disclosed rules rather than fraud: (1) pre-existing conditions get nothing shared in year one, then phase in with caps that settle at a permanent $125,000 per rolling 12 months from year four; (2) medication sharing is limited to 12 months per Need, not to exceed $10,000 (Member Guidelines v25.1); (3) maternity carries its own $5,000 responsibility amount for pregnancies beginning January 1, 2026 or later; (4) pricing is quote-based with no public rate card, so comparing quotes takes work.
How much does Knew Health cost in 2026?
Membership starts around $142/month for individuals (roughly $142–$379 depending on age and IUA choice; families roughly $400–$950). You pick an Initial Responsibility Amount of $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000, and you're never responsible for more than three IUAs per membership year. Exact pricing comes from their cost calculator — there is no public rate card.
Who should not join Knew Health?
You shouldn't if you have significant pre-existing conditions expecting full sharing (the phase-in ends at a permanent $125,000/year cap rather than ever lifting completely), if you rely on long-term prescriptions beyond 12 months per Need or above $10,000, if you live in CA, IL, MD, NY, OR, PA, VT, or WA (not available), or if you need a legal guarantee of payment — regulated ACA insurance is the honest answer there.
