Knew Health Maternity: How It Works

By The WhichHealthShare EditorsReviewed August 2026
Short answer

Knew Health shares maternity through two timing gates: pregnancy must begin at least 90 days after your membership starts, and delivery must fall after your first 12 months. For pregnancies beginning January 1, 2026 or later, maternity uses its own $5,000 responsibility amount. Plan enrollment well before conception to clear both gates.

Knew's maternity terms are workable but stricter than Zion's, so the calendar matters. Here are both gates, the new responsibility amount, and how the numbers stack against the other secular plans.

The Rules at a Glance

Gate onePregnancy begins at least 90 days after membership starts
Gate twoDelivery falls after month 12 of membership
Maternity IUA$5,000 for pregnancies beginning Jan 1, 2026 or later (per pregnancy)
GuaranteeNone. Knew Health is not insurance; sharing is voluntary.

Working Backward From Your Due Date

Because delivery must come after month twelve, the practical rule is to join at least a year before you want to be delivering. A couple joining in January 2027 clears gate two for deliveries from January 2028 onward. If your timeline is tighter, Zion's six-month conception rule or Medi-Share's join-before-conception structure fit better.

If your timeline fits the gates: no faith requirement, max three IUAs per year, no annual or lifetime cap on new needs, and a documented carve-out so controlled chronic conditions never count as pre-existing.

The Bottom Line

Knew Health works for pregnancy when you enroll early and budget the separate $5,000 amount. Tighter timelines belong on Zion. Model both paths in our scenario calculator and read our full Knew Health review before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Knew Health share pregnancy costs?

Yes, with two timing gates. The pregnancy must begin at least 90 days after your membership starts, and delivery must fall after your first 12 months. Meet both and eligible maternity bills share above the maternity IUA.

What is the maternity IUA?

For pregnancies beginning on or after January 1, 2026, maternity carries its own $5,000 responsibility amount instead of your standard IUA tier. That is per pregnancy.

What happens if I get pregnant in the first three months?

The pregnancy isn't eligible because it fails the 90-day gate. This is a disclosed rule rather than a surprise denial, but it means joining while already pregnant leaves you fully self-pay for that pregnancy at Knew.

How does Knew compare to other secular plans for pregnancy?

Zion's rule is conception at least six months in with a $2,500 standard maternity IUA, which is the shortest runway and lowest amount among secular options. Sedera requires delivery 12+ months out with $5,000/$7,500 amounts. CrowdHealth uses one $3,000 Global Pregnancy event on its full-service tier only.

Does the chronic-condition carve-out help during pregnancy?

It can. Gestational hypertension or gestational diabetes tied to an eligible pregnancy share as part of that need. And Knew's broader rule means controlled blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes don't count as pre-existing when hospitalization-free for twelve months.
